Description:

How Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Fosters Language and Intercultural Skills

In our interconnected and interdependent world, students need to develop an intercultural view of global challenges and their local implications. Students also need the skills to deal with these challenges responsibly, creatively, and collectively.
“The world is our classroom; the sky is the limit”: These metaphors describe the almost unlimited variety of possibilities for collaborative teaching and learning across geographic, cultural, and even subject boundaries. In this IALLT webinar, you will

  • learn how COIL/VE enhances language learning at all levels
  • hear about the benefits and limits of COIL/VE scenarios which have already been implemented in higher education language courses
  • come into contact with other language instructors who are interested in developing COIL/VE scenarios

Presenters:
David Prickett heads both the Center for Languages and Key Competences (Zessko) at the University of Potsdam and the English/Philology Department at Zessko. His areas of expertise comprise the use of digital media for foreign language learning, online collaborative learning, and e-assessment. In the German Association of Language Centers in Higher Education (AKS), he has served as deputy chairperson and continues to serve as a contact person between AKS and IALLT.

Frederic Matthé studied educational science with a focus on adult education/continuing education and media education and works at the Center for Quality Development in Education at the University of Potsdam. He is now responsible for the University’s COIL efforts (COIL.UP), the conception and implementation of workshops and training courses for university lecturers on digital media in teaching, and advising lecturers on the implementation of digitally supported teaching projects.
