Description:
Mastering Mentoring: Conversations with Accomplished Mentors provides a valuable resource for individuals interested in improving their mentoring skills. Drawing on interviews with experienced mentors of online language teachers, the six TED-Ed lessons illustrate strategies and provide useful tips for helping mentees achieve their goals. The lessons focus on the following key areas:
  1. What’s in it for Mentors?: Benefits include gaining broader perspectives, inspiration from new challenges, problem-solving partnerships, reciprocal learning from mentees, and deeper insights into educational strategies, to name a few.
  2. Ground Rules for a Successful Mentorship: Learn about the importance of resources, authenticity, active listening, trust, and transparent communication and ways to establish respect, boundaries, and balance.
  3. Logistics & Preparation: Preparation and organization can go a long way toward ensuring a smooth and beneficial experience for mentors and mentees alike. Discover tools and approaches for both.
  4. Building Rapport: Explore strategies such as prioritizing synchronous Zoom meetings, allotting time for genuine check-ins, sharing stories to invite openness, and showing curiosity and interest in mentees’ experiences and backgrounds.
  5. Addressing Common Challenges: How do you handle challenges such as time management, impostor syndrome, and institutional cultures resistant to collaboration? Listen in and find out!
  6. Advice & Encouragement: The mentors look back on lessons they’ve learned, and offer advice for those newer to the role.
