PhD Literacy Education, Oakland University MTESL, Arizona State University BS English and Theatre, Central Michigan University Carmela has been teaching English since 1993 in multiple contexts including adult education, corporate settings, community colleges and university programs. She has also worked as a volunteer tutor for literacy councils and other organizations for clients with language and literacy needs. She served on the MITESOL Board for seven years and is also active in the Literacy Research Association’s adult literacy initiatives. She began teaching at UM in the summer of 2011, working with aspiring Graduate Student Instructors, and joined the faculty full time in 2016. Her teaching specialties include academic reading and writing, and training for prospective teachers. Carmela’s research interests center on academic literacy and the access students have to it. She is also interested in helping to foster the integration of international students across university communities.
